Leroy “Toothpick” Allen, 83, died Monday, November 18, at Brandon Wilde Assisted Living in Evans, Georgia. Born July 31, 1936 to Martha and Job Allen in Brush, Colorado. He spent his teen years in Fort Morgan, CO achieving Eagle Scout and volunteering with the Civil Air Patrol. There he met the love of his life, Beverly, who was working the soda fountain at their local drugstore. They celebrated sixty-one years of marriage this past spring.
His career highlights include being curator and cataloger for collections at two prominent museums: Colorado State History Museum in Denver, CO and National Cowboy and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City, OK. Fitting with his western history expertise, Leroy and Beverly became western reenactors with the Buffalo Bill Museum on Lookout Mountain in Golden, CO.
He is survived by his wife Beverly, two daughters Cheryl Hewlett and Linda McSherry, and son-in-law Tim McSherry. Leroy was the proud grandfather of TJ McSherry, Devon Mcsherry, Kristin Fox, Tom Fox, Keegan Hewlett, and Katie Hewlett. His latest joy was sharing his trains with his great-grandson, Seamus McSherry.
Leroy’s ashes will be returned to Golden, CO, at a later date.
